The Sun Ra Arkestra in Poschiavo 2012

I spent Wednesday and Thursday of last week with my friend Hubi and Hubi’s friend Dario in Poschiavo in the Graubünden part of Switzerland where the Sun Ra Arkestra under the leadership of  Marshall Allen supplied the on stage music for two theatrical plays at the Uncool Festival. I shot some video there – but in fact a lot of people did. So there is no need for me editing all this stuff now. Instead I have embedded some nice clips that I found on the youtube channel of local newspaper Giornale il Bernina. Here are some excerpts from the Wednesday evening performance of the play Oedipus:

And here are some excerpts from the Thursday evening performance of the play Akhenaten:

And here is a very nice excerpt from the Saturday performance of Akhenaten (with thanks to youtube user ische66):

A few days earlier, Giornale Il Bernina had filmed the Arkestra at a home for the elderly. I am not really sure if the folks there liked what they saw and heard:

It was the largest Arkestra I have seen in a long time: 24 people including two dancers, a harpist and a small string section and you could see that the richness of the music energized Marshall Allen. For the entire – I guess – 150 minutes plus concert Marshall never sat down for a moment, led the band, played fiery solos on his devilish alto, sang, did little shuffle dances, blew up electrical storms on his EVI. There were a lot of old Arkestra veterans like Absholom Ben Shlomo, Craig Harris and Vincent Chancey. You can find the complete personnel list on the Uncool site I linked above.

Maybe later I will put up some of my own footage from the wednesday concert, but right now I thought I’d offer you some pictures I took at Wednesday’s performance of Oedipus (click on photos to enlarge):

P.S.: Besides seeing the Arkestra, we had another reason to go down to Poschiavo. Our little trip will result in a special limited edition vinyl LP featuring over 50 minutes of improvised music by …
Well I will let you in on that some time later (but hopefully this year!).
